How to Create a Modified, Updated Windows XP Installation Disk - A Quick Guide to Some Resources

Image
Producing a shinny new updated Windows XP disk is easy if you have (or at least know about) the right tools. Assuming you have a XP service pack 2 installation cd (or iso), you can do any of the following if you like: slipstream sp3 into it incorporate hotfikes incorporate, say, SATA drivers - if you want to be able to install in on many (if not most) new computers. incorporate programs like: Firefox, VLC, WP11, IE7, etc. If you want to integrate Windows Media Player 11, do this before following the instructions below. If you want to integrate drivers from DriverPacks , again, do this before using nLite. First, make sure you have Net Framework 2.0 installed, and then get a copy of nLite and install it. Then copy the entire content of your WinXP CD in some local folder (e.g., C:\XP). Note: nLite will do copy it for you if you point it to the CD. If you want to slipstream sp3 into the disk, download it from here . Get all the programs you want to include in your new XP disc. You can ...

The Original Mac vs. Windows Ad

Classic, original Mac vs Windows TV Ad

Steve Ballmer selling Windows 1.0 back in the day

A word of warning, this ad is very annoying (he's trying to hype something that really sucked). It reminds me of the movie UHF. Ripe for parody and laughs. Windows 1.0 ad

Virtualbox 1.6.4 "Shared Folders" does not work with XP guest

Others have been having this problem as well. To solve it - download VBoxGuestAdditons 1.6.0 from here . Uninstall the 1.6.4 (or the 1.6.2, which also seems to cause problems) version of guest additions and install this older one. Reboot. Hopefully this problem will be fixed soon.

Gnome's Evolution vs EssentialPIM: A Rant

Image
There are certain applications on Windows that are just better than anything on Linux. When it comes to PIMs, a LOT of them are better than those available on Linux. In fact, most of the Linux one's suck. I've written about this before , but I'm annoyed enough now that I want to revisit it. In particular I want to compare what I think is a pretty good freeware PIM on Windows - Essential PIM, with the best thing that Linux has to offer presently - Evolution. By in large, there is not much of a comparison. EssentialPIM is FAR better than Evolution as a PIM. It is flexible in ways I doubt Evolution will Ever be (which makes me sad - because I want Linux to have superior or at least equally compatible apps). Here is a list of features that make EssentialPIM superior (and this is by no means exhaustive): Screen Real Estate First, EssentialPIM has much better screen real estate. EssentialPIM has a menubar, and then the rest of the window is used by some aspect of the program. Evo...

Virtualbox Hardy Ubuntu (host) USB Support in Windows XP (guest)

For purposes of this tutorial, I will assume that you already have installed Virtualbox (th Personal Use & Evaluation License Version), have installed Windows XP as a guest, and have also installed Guest Additions. Here are the steps from here: sudo gedit /etc/init.d/mountdevsubfs.sh. Uncomment these lines (arount line 42): mkdir -p /dev/bus/usb/.usbfs domount usbfs "" /dev/bus/usb/.usbfs -obusmode=0700,devmode=0600,listmode=0644 ln -s .usbfs/devices /dev/bus/usb/devices mount --rbind /dev/bus/usb /proc/bus/usb sudo /etc/init.d/mountdevsubfs.sh start Virtualbox - Settings: Make sure to enable USB created a group named "usbfs" and added yourself to it. sudo gedit /etc/fstab Add (make sure that the devid is correct for "usbfs" in System - Administration - Users and Groups): usbfs /proc/bus/usb usbfs devgid=1003,devmode=0666 0 0 sudo mount -a (which will remount everything in fstab) That did it for me! Hope this helps someone. Technorati ...

Installing XP on SATA Harddrives

XP, even XP sp3 does not include support for SATA hard drives. Here is a great guide to getting it working.

Soup up Microsoft's Command Shell

Recently, I've gotten back into programming. Its been a couple of years and the last time I was into it I was working in a UNIX environment. Now I'm in a Window's XP environment. I've already felt a bit frustrated with Microsoft's standard command shell (cmd.exe). First, it lacks many of the commands I have come to know and love. Second, it's tab auto completion is lacking - when you hit tab, it cycles through all the filename matches rather than displaying a list of all of the matches. And third, I want my command shell to preserve my command history across sessions. I've been searching around, and I've yet to find a free command shell in windows that has all of these features. Here is what I found: cmd.exe: This is the standard command shell. Its not to difficult to get it to use windows ports of the UNIX commands I want with the help of unxutils. Here and here are useful instructions for setting this up. Winone : This is the closest thing I've ...
